SMSTS vs SSSTS: Which one for me?

In the UK construction industry safety training isn’t just a nice thing to have; it is essential. Two of the most recognised safety qualifications you will come across are SMSTS and SSSTS, both accredited by the Construction industry Training Board (CITB).

Although they may sound similar, they’re designed for different levels of responsibilities and play distinct roles in your career progression. Understanding which one fits your current job and future goals can make a big difference.

What is SSSTS?

SSSTS stands for Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme.

This is a 1-day course and aimed at people who:

  • Supervise workers on site for example foreman, team leaders, chargehands

  • Lead small teams and need to implement safe system of work

  • Are stepping up from operative roles into supervision

    The course covers:

  • Legal responsibilities relevant to health, safety, welfare and environmental issues

  • How to monitor work to make sure it’s done safely

  • Risk assessments and method statements at a supervisory level

  • Communicating with workers and reporting risks up the chain

This is best for supervisors, new team leaders and people about to take on supervisory duties.

What is SMSTS?

SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme

This is a 5-day course and goes into deeper and more comprehensive course targeted at:

  • Site Managers

  • Project Managers

  • Senior supervisors and higher-level personnel with overall site responsibility

It goes beyond supervision to site-wide management, covering topics like:

This course is best for those with overall responsibility for planning, organising and controlling site operations, the SMSTS course looks at strategic planning and compliance across an entire site.

When to choose a SSSTS

  • Currently supervise a team or expect to soon

  • Want foundational safety training without jumping into full site management

  • Are aiming for roles like supervisor, foreman or team leader

  • Want the minimum standard many contractors ask for supervisory roles

When to choose SMSTS

  • Manage or will manage entire sites or projects

  • Are responsible for legal compliance, planning and documentation

  • Want to move into senior management roles

  • Are ready for a deeper, more detailed training experience

While there are no strict formal entry requirements for either course, this is designed for individuals who already work within the construction industry. Some practical on-site experience is strongly recommended.

Both SSSTS and SMSTS are respected, industry-recognised safety qualifications that can significantly boost your confidence, competence and career in construction. SSSTS lays the foundation for effective supervision, while SMSTS prepares you for full site management

responsibility, so the right choice depends on your current role and where you want to go next in  your career. Ultimately, choosing between SSSTS and SMSTS comes down to your current responsibilities and your future ambitions within the construction industry. If you're stepping into a supervisory role and want to strengthen your ability to manage teams safely and effectively on site, SSSTS is an excellent starting point. However, if you are already managing projects or aiming for a site management position, SMSTS will provide the broader knowledge and leadership skills required to oversee site safety, planning and compliance. Whichever path you choose, investing in recognised health and safety training is a positive step towards building a safer working environment and advancing your professional development.
